Elk Regional Announces ‘Pink Palooza’ Breast Cancer Awareness Event

Each year, one in six women is diagnosed with breast cancer. By the end of this year, the American Cancer Society estimates more than 10,500 women in Pennsylvania will be diagnosed with the disease.

“The fight against breast cancer is more than a fight against a disease,” said Lisa Housler, the Director of Imaging Services at Elk Regional. “It’s a celebration of the everyday heroes who refuse to let cancer get the better of them. It’s a chance to let those battling the disease know that they’re not alone. It’s an opportunity to inspire others to join the fight. And it’s a chance to provide men and women with their best weapon in the fight – information about the disease and how to minimize risk.”

On Sept. 22 beginning at 6 p.m., Elk Regional Health Center will host “Pink Palooza” – an event designed to educate, inform and inspire the community about breast cancer and the fight to find a cure – at The Red Fern.

During “Pink Palooza,” attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions about women’s health issues and have them answered by an expert panel that includes general surgeons Dr. Adrienne Fueg, Dr. K.C. Joseph and Dr. Narayana Subramany; obstetrical and gynecological specialists Dr. Steven Koch, Dr. Marc Landsberg and Dr. Wu Jan Lin; Dr. David Obley, a radiologist; Paulette Schreiber, a Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner who specializes in women’s health; and Julie Szymanski, a Certified Nurse Midwife.

Questions for the expert panel can be submitted when attendees RSVP for the event or asked during the question-and-answer session. Index cards will be provided for attendees who do not wish to speak up during the event.

During “Pink Palooza,” Elk Regional will feature a video of its Pink Glove Dance, during which physicians, employees and volunteers from throughout the Health System danced while wearing pink exam gloves to raise awareness about breast cancer.

The Pink Glove Dance began at Providence St. Vincent Health Center in Portland, Oregon and has become a national phenomenon, including thousands of health professionals from dozens of hospitals and cancer centers across the country. Also featured during the event will be Elk Regional’s “Celebrating Women” video, the culmination of the Celebrating Women Campaign conducted in conjunction with the opening of the Women’s Imaging Center.

As part of the campaign, women throughout the region whose heart, courage and strength of character are an inspiration to others were nominated and included in a professional photo shoot. Their photographs will hang on a Wall of Honor in the Women’s Imaging Center to provide inspiration to women who come into the Center for care.

Mammotome, a company that specializes in equipment to perform minimally invasive breast biopsy, will provide hors d’oeuvres at the event, which will also include door prizes.

To RSVP, call Elk Regional’s Public Relations Department at (814) 788-8832.
