Elk Regional Kicks Off $2.5 Million Capital Campaign

Elk Regional Health System has announced it is kicking off The Elk Regional Capital Campaign: A Vision for Tomorrow – a $2.5 million fundraising initiative that will support the hospital’s recently announced expansion and modernization project.

Don W. Fleming, a longtime member of the Elk Regional Health System Board of Directors, will chair The Elk Regional Capital Campaign. Members of capital campaign committee also include William C. Conrad, Neil Hoffman and John Rogers.

“Mr. Fleming was the natural choice to head up this capital campaign,” said Gregory P. Bauer, the President and CEO of Elk Regional Health System. “Time and time again, in a number of different ways, Mr. Fleming has demonstrated his commitment to our Health System and the communities it serves. That commitment has been instrumental in making Elk Regional the organization it is today.”

The expansion and modernization project will dramatically update Elk Regional’s patient rooms, which are currently housed in buildings constructed in 1941 and 1958.

The new floor will house 42 new, private, spacious medical/surgical patient rooms, each with a private bathroom and close proximity to modern nurse work stations. The new floor will also house a new, more secure 10-bed Generations Unit, which is Elk Regional’s geriatric behavioral health unit.

Also as part of the project, Elk Regional will renovate space on the first floor near the operating suite and construct a new Family Unit. The new Family Unit will contain eight rooms, each with their own private bathroom. Four of those rooms will be for OB/GYN patients and four will be for labor, delivery and recovery patients, situated near a modern nurse work station.

Construction is expected to begin early next spring and could be complete by the end of 2012.

The Elk Regional Capital Campaign has been ongoing since mid-August, when the hospital’s family – which includes employees, volunteers, the medical staff, Boards of Directors, the Elk Regional Health System Foundation and Elk Regional Health System Auxiliary – began a giving campaign. The Board of Directors giving campaign is being chaired by Robert O’Leary, the Board chairman, and H. Robert Hoare, a longtime Board member.

Elk Regional’s medical staff is also conducting a giving campaign, which is led by Dr. K.C. Joseph and a team of physicians that includes Dr. Joseph Salinas, Dr. Maurus Sorg, Dr. David Caruso, Dr. Christopher Colosimo and Dr. Mark Shulkosky.

Meanwhile, members of the Health System’s Board of Directors, the Community Nurses, Inc. Board of Directors, the Pinecrest Manor Board of Directors and the ELCO Glen Board of Directors are each conducting giving campaigns.

Soon, The Elk Regional Capital Campaign will begin reaching out to community leaders throughout Elk and Cameron counties to solicit their support.

“This project is the single most important thing we can do to ensure that this hospital has a bright future,” said Stephen Quinn, a member of Elk Regional Health System’s Board of Directors. “Health care is undergoing massive changes right now, both locally and at the national level. As that change happens, delivery models continue to change dramatically. However, Elk Regional is and will remain the principal provider of health care for people in a very large region for years to come. The importance of this building and expansion project simply cannot be overstated.”

The capital campaign is being conducted internally, Fleming said, not through an outside consultant – so every dollar raised through the campaign will be spent on the construction of the new floor.

Contributions to the campaign may be made over a period of up to five years, or at the option of the donor. Organizations and individuals who wish to make a donation may contact Sam MacDonald, the Health System’s Director of Business and Fund Development, at 788-8585.
